I have played a few times now, and every time I exit the game, I come back to continue game, and it tells me that all my swaps are gone, so new game must commence. Last time, I had 23 swaps left. Please fix this.

This is a known bug. What happens is that on the end of level screen the game counts down your swaps and reduces them to zero. It doesn't give you more swaps until you hit "ok" and proceed to the next screen. If you stop playing before hitting "ok" (an entirely natural thing to do) the game saves with no swaps, and then when you load it up again it sees that you have no swaps and takes you immediately to the game over screen.

This has been fixed in an update which is with Apple now waiting for approval. For now if you hit "ok" and start the next level before stopping this will not happen. The fix should be available soon.

Your workaround is how I have been playing, and it does not work for me. I wait until I see the new letter grid for the next round. I can see swaps, as expected, under the grid. I return to the menu and then close the app. Bear in mind, I am not on a multitasking-capable device. Thus, I am truly closing the app. Also, I am in airplane mode, to save battery.

Could either the single-app device or the lack of internet connection be causing the problem?

We are working on this.

For now, you can use the "iCloud" button in the in-game menu to save your game to iCloud when you take a break (or whenever you feel like it) to ensure that your game is safe.

iCloud would be a great workaround--for a device capable of supporting iCloud.

This is a word game with minimal system requirements. There is no reason that local saving should not work. Local saving should ALWAYS be a priority over: Game Center, iCloud, multiplayer, etc. Starting with the fundamentals is alway good advice.
